Third-year students at a study programme at Budapest

At the end of February (19-24), third-year students of the Environmental Science Department visited Budapest as part of the Makovecz Programme. The main organiser of the study trip was Professor Tamás Weiszburg.

Here is the raport of the students:

At the university called Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem, we were welcomed by Tamás Weiszburg, who showed us around one of the buildings where our classes were held during the week, explained the numbering of the rooms so that we could find our way around and we also visited one of the university's collections. We then went to the Mineralogy Department, where we had our first classes. During the class we had a practical exercise. We examined the surface and the wear of the granite slabs of the building, in relation to where they are located and at what angle to the ground.

In a mineralogical laboratory, the theory and operation of a scanning electron microscope was explained by a former PhD student of professor Weiszburg, who is an expert in this field of mineralogy. The microscope can be used to determine the chemical information of soil or rock samples, i.e. what minerals they consist of.

Dr. Tibor Németh, assistant professor, held us a lecture and a laboratory exercise. We prepared soil samples for qualitative analyses. The samples were sieved, then put into measuring cylinders, filled with distilled water up to the measuring cylinder mark, mixed together, then put into an ultrasonic shaker to make sure that the aggregates would separate, then left to settle for 5 hours. After a break for lunch, we had a theory lesson and then went back to the lab to finish our task.

After we finished the laboratory work, we had a recap of the whole week's lessons, were given an assignment to complete and then we closed the week. The next morning at 8am we were on our way back to Cluj-Napoca.
