Field trip at the Pata Rât landfill

The students of the 3rd year of the Environmental Science Department participated in a field trip at the Pata Rât landfill, which is situated in the neighbourhood of Cluj-Napoca.

Eugen Veres, chief executive of the Brantner-Veres Company, told to the students that 90% of the waste consists of recyclable material (that means about 600 tons each day), which is manually sorted out by the Roma community working at the landfill. The carefully sorted out material is transported to different cities in Romania in order to be recycled.

The participants have been told that a new landfill was going to be built with the financial support of the European Union and of the regional administration. According to the plans, the new establishment should be functional by March 2014. The new centre will receive and recycle waste from the city and other settlements in the region.
